PURCHASE OF OUTFIT FOR JOHN BATES

Audit Office, Ottawa, October 8, 1894
Sir - Commissioner Smith's cheque No. 192 of July 24, 1894, is for payment of $15 to the Hudson's Bay company for an outfit of clothing for John Bates (Pady boy). Kindly give full explanations of this expenditure.

I am, sir, your obedient servant
The Deputy Minister of Interior, J. L. McDougall, A. G.

Interior Dept, Ottawa, October 11, 1894
Sir,- I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated October 8, requesting an explanation of an expenditure of $15 for an outfit of clothing for John Bates, and in reply I am to inform you that this boy had been brought over to this country by Mr. W. J. Pady, and having been taken sick in Winnipeg, was in utter destitution. The department having severed all connection with Mr. Pady, and the case being an urgent one, efforts were made to find him some place. There were successful, a respectable mechanic offering to adopt the lad if the department would furnish necessary clothing. This, being undoubtedly the best solution of the difficulty was accordingly done.

I am, sir, your obedient servant, The Auditor General
Lyndwode Pereira, Ass. Secy
