NotesAnnie's mother, at 16, moved in with a man 10 years older than her in order to get away from her abusive, drunkard father. By the time she was 20 she had 3 daughters, one of whom died at 2 yrs. When the older man left her for another woman she took up with a married man with whom she had two daughters, Annie being the youngest. Before the birth of Annie, her mother left the father and their first daughter and when Annie was a couple of months old, the two oldest daughters were dropped off with Barnardo's. At 4 yrs of age (1901), after spending the night outdoors, Annie's mother took her to Barnardo's as well. She never saw her again nor her older sisters. She lived for a few years with a foster family in Essex and in 1906 was shipped to Canada. The two older sisters were sent in 1902. Annie was placed with an elderly widow and at 9 years old was placed in charge of running the household. She was well-treated in this home though and came to refer to the elderly woman as "Mother".
