He may have enlisted in the First World War, birth year is about right, he lists his occupation as a weaver and says he was born in England.

Thomas's name is listed on the "Faithful Unto Death From Annual Report for Dr Barnardo's Homes 1920.677 old Barnardo boys who gave their lives in the Great War." I cannot find a record of his death in the war.
