NotesOn October 3 1920, Horace Benn,10 arrived in Canada, he declared his aim in coming was to do farm work. His destination was Mr J W Hobday, 50-52 Peter St, Toronto, Ontario, and his next of kin in England was Dr Barnardo Homes, 18-26 Stepney Causeway, London, he gave his birthplace as Yorkshire.

Horace was living with his mother Mary E. Benn, a widow, in the 1911 census on Cumberland St, Sheffield. Mary had married Frank Benn who appears to have died in 1904. (Frank Benn died at Wadsley Asylum aged 42; buried on July 27, 1904). When his mother died in 1912, Horace was placed in the homes at Fir Vale; he was transferred over to Dr Barnardo's for emigration to Canada.
