NotesOn 5 Dec 1913, Isaiah Birch, 20, farm lab, returned to England on SS Empress of Britain

Isaiah Birch, birthplace unknown, aged 19 years and 212 days, farm labourer, enlisted in the British Army on March 4th 1914, he declared that he had lived in Canada for 7 years with E Ross, Panmuir?, Ontario. He stated he was joining the Northamptonshire Regiment. He died on 27 February 1915 of measles.

His war records also mention that he was boarded as a Barnardo Child in England with a Mrs Esther Adams, Little London, Silverstone, nr Towcester,

His records make interesting reading, according to the army when he originally enlisted he declared no relatives, and named Mrs Adams in his military will, the above John and Amelia Smith contacted the Army, declaring themselves to be his parents, quite a few letters went back and forth about his medals as Mrs Adams family received the medals. At some point in 1923 the medals and plaque were returned to the Army but is not clear whether his 'natural family' ever received them or not.
