In 1901, Eliza Brearley, 3, was shown residing at 75 South Burns, Chester Le Street, Durham, England. Other family members included: David Brearley 7; Eliza Brearley 25; Robertb [sic] Brearley 33, coachman helper; Robert E. Brearley 5; and Thomas Brearley 2. In 1912, Eliza Brearley, 14, arrived in Quebec, Canada, in a group of 153 Barnardo girls en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. (Eliza's brother, Robert (Bob) Brearley, arrived in Canada on the Dominion in 1907. Bob always believed the spelling of his name to be Braley.)
On September 14, 1918, at 275 Main Street, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Elizabeth Brearley, general house work, born in England to Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Jenkinson; and John Myron Gifford, 21, mechanic, born in Cayuga, Ontario, Canada, to John Myron Gifford and Mary Katharine Gratz.
Eliza attempted to find her brother, Bob, and sent letters to Barnardos. She was finally able to contact him after the first world war.
