STOLE BECAUSE SHE HAD NOT BEEN TAUGHT BETTER

Judge Morgan Gives Barnardo Girl a Chance and a Warning

'I don't want to send you to jail--I want to give you a chance. But remember that you are getting a chance, for if you continue this petty thieving I shall send you to a place where you will not be given any opportunity to take things for a year.' This was Judge Morgan's warning to Emily Brooks, a ninetee-year-old girl, who pleaded guilty in the County Judge's Criminal Court to stealing a quantity of table linen and silver and cut glassware. She is a Barnardo girl and has been in this country eight years.

'I never was taught any better,' was her explanation of her action.

'I'll put you under the care of the Salvation Army,' said the judge, althought the girl said she thought she would do better by herself. She was taken to the Salvation Army Home in Jarvis street.

On September 29, 1915, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Emily Bessie Brooks, 21, born in England to Alfred Brooks and Nellie Farrell; and Peter Macmaster, 26, laborer, born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, to William Macmaster and Mary Morrison.
