In 1916, Frederick Cawthorne joined the Canadian army to serve in World War I. (Soldiers of the First World War (1914-1918). Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa, Canada). He stated that he was born in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. He was single and his next of kin was William A. Baird, his uncle. Due to the birthdate and area he declares as his birth, this is almost certainly the same Frederick Cawthorne.
