Notes Dorcas Louisa Charker was born on March 7, 1881. Her mother was Sarah Ann Charker, father unknown.
We are unsure of the details but know that Dorcas had a younger sister Mary Ann, also father unknown and that both girls were put into care in a orphanage or workhouse between 1881 and 1890 when Dorcas was taken by Maria Rye to Canada where she went to live in Toronto, ON. Mary Ann remained in England. Dorcas' mother Sarah Ann remarried and had more children, one of which was named Florance (Flory). Dorcas at some point made contact with Mary Ann and began corresponding with her and with Flory whom when she left England in 1890 had not yet been born.
Dorcas remained in Toronto her entire life. She married Gilbert Bell when she was 18 years of age and had two sons, Vernon and Wilfred. She was an active and important member of the Conservative Party in Toronto.
