Notes In the 1901 Census of Scotland, James Cooney, age 3, is shown living at 4 Highland Lane, in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, along with James Cooney, 25, a yarn dyer; Isabella Cooney, 25; Elizabeth Cooney, 1; and Charles Cooney, 4 months.
In 1911, James was shown as a Home boy with John Ronson and family in McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada.
In January, 1924, James crossed from Canada into the United States (via Detroit, Michigan). He stated he was a barber, 25 years of age, that he was Scotch and his next of kin was Charles Cooney, who lived in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He also stated that he paid the passage himself and was planning on visiting his sister, Mrs. A. Doris, who lived at 420 Harper Avenue in Detroit. He was 5 foot 5 inches in height; had a fair complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He was born in Paisley, Scotland.
James evidently was living in Detroit one year later in 1925. He is shown on the Detroit Border Records as having accompanied his brother, Charles, into Detroit with the intention of both living there.
