NotesA birth registration was found for Denis Corlis: Year of Registration: 1878; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: Manchester (1837-1924); County: Lancashire; Volume: 8d; Page: 234. He was born at 3 Mundy Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

In 1890, Denis Corless, 12 (along with his brother Mark Corless, 9) arrived in Quebec, Canada, having sailed via Londonderry 18 Apr 1890, with a group of 77 children accompanied by 3 Matrons (Sisters Fidelis, Humiliana and 1 unnamed) en route to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Denis returned to England before December 1897 when he was living and working on a farm in Suffolk. He joined the British Army on February 1, 1898, when he was 18 years and 8 months old. Denis had been living on the farm for 8 months. From this enlistment he was discharged on January 1, 1914.

On April 3, 1914, Denis Corliss re-enlisted for short service with the 4th Battalion, Essex (Service No. 200338) in the British Army. He declared in his papers that he was a British subject; that he was born in Manchester, England; that he was a labourer; that he was currently serving in the 4th/Essex Regiment; that he had not served previously "except in the militia in which I am still serving"; that his father was John Corliss, who resided at Bloom Street, Salford, Manchester, England; that his brother was Mark Corliss, c/o of Mascouchs Company, L., Assumption, Canada; and that his sister was Mary Ellen Corliss, at home. He was described as 5 foot 3-1/4 inches in height; fresh complexion; grey eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Wesleyan faith. He had a distinguishing mark of a scar over his left eyebrow. Denis was living at 135 Douglas Road, Romford, England at the time of this enlistment.

Denis served for eight years, including service in the Boer war, for which he received the Queen's medal with six clasps and the Kings medal with two clasps. He was transferred to the reserves on January 31, 1906, serving throughout for eight years. He was finally discharged on March 25, 1919. He served on Gallipoli and Palestine and was awarded three service medals.

He was denied a service pension when he applied for one in 1934. He stated he was getting on in years and suffering from rheumatism. He did not fulfill the conditions for the Royal Hospital Pension, however if he lived to the age of 65, he would fall under the Special Campaign Pension.

Denis Corlis married Charlotte Sophia Maria Crabb on October 20, 1906 in Billericay, Essex, England. They had four children, Mary Agnes (born April 6, 1910); Dennis John (born July 1, 1912); Mary Ellen (born July 31, 1914); and Francis (born June 10, 1904).

Denis and Charlotte emigrated to New Zealand with their family about 1920. In January, 1935, he was residing at 31 Cobden Street, Newton, Auckland, New Zealand.

Denis Corlis died August 21, 1948, and Charlotte died on January 3, 1945, both in Napier, New Zealand.
