NotesAccording to the Children's Friends Society book:

William Cornwall - born 7 December, 1825 came to Western Australia from Britain on the 'Sterling' .. arriving in Fremantle on the 14th of March, 1841.

William was approx. 16 years of age (though the book says 15). He was in a group of children being brought to Australia by the Society. Lionel Samson (of Fremantle) was also aboard (with his own cabin) and the children were sent out in his care.

A paying passenger in steerage was a Andrew Cornwall, born in 1812, making him 29. The book says he was William's older brother. There's no explanation as to why he is aboard (perhaps he had been sent out to ensure young William was looked after). There is no record of Andrew Cornwall beyond the voyage. It is a possibility he returned to England once he saw young Cornwall settled. The Samson family obviously took special interest in William as they employed him as their apprentice (they were well known merchants in Fremantle, and their family home is now a National Trust house.

The book also says the children were sent from England with accompanying paperwork including date of birth, baptismal and parish details, parentage and a sketch of their characters and aspirations.

William later worked as a shepherd in the York district in the 1850's and 60's, eventually acquiring a pastoral empire of around million acres in the Narrogin, Williams, and Kojonup districts. He owned the Bridge hotel at Williams in 1871 and the Royal hotel in Kojonup in 1883.

On October 30, 1860, at Perth, Western Australia, a marriage was registered between William Cornwall and Elizabeth Mary Malone.

At least 9 children were born of this marriage: William Beaufort Cornwall 1861 ? 1862; Thomas Joseph Cornwall 1863 ? 1952; Mary Anne Cornwall 1864 ? 1955; William George Cornwall 1866 ? 1914; John Cornwall 1868 ? 1918; Elizabeth Cornwall 1869 ? 1956; Hester Josephine Cornwall 1876 ? 1941; and Walter Cornwall 1879 ? 1941.

William Cornwall died on 6th August, 1908 at the age of 83.
