NotesIn 1912, John Day, 10, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 181 Barnardo boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On June 10, 1925, at 229 Queen Street, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between John Day, 23, Willys St. Clair employee, born in England, residing in Port Huron Mich. He did not know his parents names. He came to Canada under Dr. Barnardo's care; and Lena May Hales, 19, stenographer, born in Camlachie Ontario, Canada, residing in Marysville, Michigan, daughter of Ephraim Hales and Clara May Taylor. Witnesses: Walter Charles and Katie Evelyn Barge of 1305 Forsythe.

John (called Jack) Day wrote a book called "95 Years With John ?Jack? Day The Orphan Nobody Wanted." According to the book, he grew up in Dr. Barnardo's Orphanage in London. At the age of ten, he was sent across the North Atlantic to Canada to work on a farm. He eventually worked his way to the train yards of the midwest, always searching for a home of his own, until finally he settled in Decatur, Illinois, where he spent the remainder of his life.

This very candid autobiography includes Day's estrangement from his only son, his reaction to his first wife's love affair, to the Great Depression, to his own love affair, and to a long-term, but limited second marriage. An active, competent, and graceful man until his last days, Day left a truly honest legacy in this story of an ordinary man.

This book arrived two weeks before John Day's death. Alert to the end, he showed it to the steady stream of visitors who came in and out of his room. It was, he said, something he had to do."
