On April 3, 1915, Charles DeFoss enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Mrs. Christina DeFoss, who resided in the Union Workhouse, Hull, Yorkshire, England; that his date of birth was April 1, 1893; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; dark blue eyes; and dark brown hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.
