On May 24, 1913, a marriage was registered between Herbert Edwin Down, 24, and Florence E. Bottom, 21, daughter of Alfred Bottom and Emily Powis. Herbert stated he was born in Lifton, Devon, England; he was a glass cutter; and his parents names were John Ames Down and Mary J. Gregory.

On November 6, 1915, Herbert Edwin Down enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He had a brother named Oscar Fitzland DOWN (known as Arthur), 1879-1946.

Herbert is buried at Glendale Cemetery.
