In 1903, James Essex, 13 (along with sister Edith Essex, 9) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 124 Middlemore children.
On November 21, 1912, at Amherst, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada, a marriage was registered between David Alfred Joudry, 23, laborer, born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, to David and Margaret Joudry (father dead); and Edith Clara Essex, 20, born in Birmingham, England, to James and Edith Essex (father a laborer). (At the time of her marriage in 1912, Edith was living in Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick.)
