Notes Thomas' mother was Florence Eveleigh and his father was Thomas Hodge. They never married but lived together and had several children together. My grandfather,Thomas was the only child to live. When his father died in 1895, he and his mother fell into extreme poverty. His mother died of phthisis in1899. His mother took him to Barbardos where he was trained as a brushmaker. When he came to Canada he was placed in a factory making brushes. Thomas married twice. His first wife, May Furniss died in about 1916 and they had no children. He remarried, Tempa Wardhaugh (nee Bell) and had my mother, Florence, in 1918.
My grandfather lied about where he was born all of his life. He always said he was born in Australia, even on his marriage papers. He must have felt such shame about his origins. He was a good man, and I am so pleased to be able to claim him on this site.
