Notes Frank's father (a cobbler) died leaving a mother with no means of support to look after several children. At least three of the older children were sent to the Barnardo Home for Orphans. Franks older brother Willie, emigrated to Canada through a Barnardo program in which orphans worked on farms for their keep. Later Frank joined him in Huron County, sometimes working on the same farm, sometimes with a different farm family.
Willie stepped on a pitchfork and subsequently died of tetanus poisoning (lockjaw). Frank had met Mary Johnston in the neighbourhood. She was a good friend and great support to him in time of trouble. In 1940 they married.
