In 1881, Elizabeth Gay, 7 years of age, is residing at 304 Portobello Road, East Side, Chelsea, Kensington, London, England. Other family members included: Charlotte Gay, widow, 34; [Charlotte] Alice Gay, 11; Kate Gay, 5; Maude Gay, 2; Nellie Gay, 4; and Robert Gay, 12 months. In 1881, Elizabeth Gay, 8 (along with her sister, Kate Gay, 7) arrived in Quebec, Canada, with a group of 65 children (mostly girls) en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

A report from Maria Rye lists the Children from the Peckham home in 1881 and their placements in Canada. Both sisters were placed in Newcastle, Ontario, Canada: Elizabeth to a Mr. F. N., Wharfinger; [EDITORS NOTE: Mr. Francis Nicholson was harbour master for many years in the Village of Newcastle]; and Kate to Mr. J. L., Farmer.
