In 1901, a Nellie Gear, 6 years of age, is found living at the Reigate Union Workhouse, in Reigate, Surrey with her sister, Alice Gear, aged 8 years of age. They are listed as paupers. (Source: 1901 Census of England and Wales; Class: RG13; Piece: 628; Folio: 92; Page: 6.)

The port record of March, 1911, in Portland, Maine, shows Nellie as stating her sister was "Agnes Gear" who was living in England, and her nearest relative.

In 1911 she is listed as a Home Girl with the George Kay family in Brock, Ontario, Canada.
