Notes Mother Alice Matilda GRIST nee ELSEY died in 1900, father John GRIST remarried widow Sarah Maria Ellen MASON nee KING. "Ellen" as she was known died in childbirth 1902, father John GRIST remarried for the fourth time another widow, Jessie Alice JENNINGS nee RALPH. John GRIST died in 1905 leaving four young boys. Charles & Thomas Henry MASON. "Ellen's" son's and Alice Matilda's son's James William & Albert Edward GRIST. Stepmother Jessie was unable to look after these children and it appears that neither were any other family members, so these four children were admitted to Barnardos and shipped over to work on farms in Canada.
Ed's first wife Charity died in 1935 aged 39 in Winnipeg.
"On Oct 18th, 1961 in the Winnipeg General Hospital, Edward (Ed) Grist, aged 66 years, beloved husband of Marion E.Grist, of 636 Alverstone St. Funeral service 2:15 Saturday in the Clark Leatherdale Funeral Home, interment in Brookside Cemetery with Rev.Rex Dolan officiating. Mr. Grist was born in Deal, Kent, England, on Nov 23rd, 1894. He came to Canada 55 years ago and resided in Manitoba for 47 years. He served overseas with the 52nd Canadian Batallion, Toronto Regiment from 1914 to 1919. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. & an Elder of Young United Church for 10 years, also a member of the Valour Road Legion for 26 years, and the I.W.V.A. Mr.Grist was employed by General Motors for 40 years, the latter 20 years with Carter Motors.
