Notes Harriet was sent to Canada with her half sister Sarah Shirt aboard the Parisian on April 5th 1891. She was 12 at the time as confirmed in the ship's passenger list. Harriet's father was William Edward Augustus Mew Heath, he married Harriet's mother Mary Anne Shirt nee Davis in 1877 after the death of her husband Thomas Shirt who was serving in the British Army India......Harriet had a full brother William Augustus Heath...also two half siblings Sarah as already mentioned and John Thomas Francis Shirt who was the only child to stay in the UK.
William, Harriet's father was also serving in India when in 1879 on a skirmish at Doaba he was shot and had to have his leg amputated in the field, he was later discharged from the Army and returned to the UK...the family moved to Dartford in Kent where William Jnr was born, between 1881 and 1883 William snr moved to London to find work and sent his family back to his parents on the Isle of Wight in Hampshire, during his time in London he met a woman called Ellen Cooper whom he embarked on an affair with, they had a child called Nellie Heath.
William snr never returned to Hampshire to collect his family, he abandoned them to the poor law, and Mary can be found in the workhouse in Freshwater, Isle of Wight....an application to put her oldest son John into Gordon's boy's home described her as "Miserably poor" it was later that year that the other 3 children were given up and sent to Canada.
Harriet married Alexander Stewart Johnson,he died under two years after the birth of their child who's name I still haven't found...it is the descendants of that family i'm trying to locate. Nik Emery
