John Hemming arrived in Quebec, Canada, at the age of 18, with 15 young persons en route to various destinations.
On September 20, 1914, John Hemming enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Service Number: 6564; Force: Army; Unit: Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment); Division: 1st Battalion.) He declared that he was born in Worcestershire, England; that his next of kin was Mary Ann Hemming of Stonehall Common, Worcestershire, England; that his birthdate was March 12, 1893; that he was a laborer by trade; that he was not married; and that he belonged to the active militia. He is described as 5 foot 8 inches in height; dark complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had a vaccination mark on his left arm.
On January 26, 1916, Private John Hemming died in battle. He is buried at the WESTOUTRE CHURCHYARD EXTENSION in Belgium (Grave Reference: II. B. 4.)
