Notes Cuthbert was sent from the Royal Philanthropic Society Farm School, Redhill, Surrey where he had been a juvenile offender under detention for 4 years. His parents were both still alive and according the Society's records his father, Benjamin Herring an architect and surveyor was of good character and circumstances. According to the Farm School records which I have examined at the Surrey History Centre - Cuthbert went to work for a Mr Armstrong at Guelph Mills, Wellington, Ontario. He seems to have returned to England within a couple of years, but in 1877 Mr Armstrong wrote & offered him ?6 as a loan for his passage back to Canada.......From then on he variously joins the Royal Navy (as Charles Whitton), goes to Scotland, and writes from Michigan in 1882. In 1885 he was in Swifton, and in Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas. Last heard of in 1887 in Clay County, Arkansas.
