NotesA birth registration was found for John Hitchcock: Date: Oct-Nov-Dec 1897; District: Chelsea; County: London; Volume: 1a; Page: 390. Parents: John Hitchcock and Mary Fowler, married December 26, 1893, Taunton, Somerset, England.

His father, John Hitchcock, of Chelsea, London deserted the family in 1902 and ran away to West Bromwich with a girl 15 years his junior, where he started a second family. The mother and three children moved between the Taunton and Chelsea Workhouses until the mother (Mary nee Fowler) died of TB on 4 November 1903. After a further stay in Chelsea Workhouse the three children, Helen b. 1895, John b. 1897 and George b. 1900 were accepted into Dr Barnardo's on 5th January 1904.

On July 1, 1916, at Bownmanville, Ontario, Canada, John Hitchcock, 18, joined the Canadian Army (Overseas Expeditionary Force). He declared that he resided at Bowmanville Box 415, Ontario; that he was born in London, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Nellie Hitchcock, who resided at 1232 Shaw Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was November 13, 1897; that he was a framer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 5-1/2 inches in height; ruddy complexion; blue eyes; red hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

Private John Hitchcock died on April 2, 1918, probably in the Battle of the Somme Defensive. He is buried at Wanquetin Communal Cemetery (Grave Reference: I. D. 12), 12 kilometres west of Arras, France.
