Ethel Horwood was admitted to the Lambeth Workhouse on 3 Feb 1909, aged 9 months - it was stated her parents had deserted her and her brother. She spent at least 9 years of her life in the Norwood School. Her brother George was admitted on the same day. He left in 1920 to live at the Working Boys Home in Warwick Avenue, London (Hanbury House).
In 1922, Ethel Horwood, 14, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 22 Barnardo girls en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. She declared that her intended occupation was as a domestic; that she was born in London, England; that her final destination was to Dr. Barnardo's Homes, Hazel Brae, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada; and that her nearest relation was her brother, George Horwood, Hanbury House, Warwick Avenue, London, England.
