Notes(EDITORS NOTE: There is a possibility that his parents were William Alexander Kay and Elizabeth Shaw of Glasgow, but not documentation exists.)

In 1894, Robert Kay, 14, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with a group of 139 Quarrier children en route to Brockville, Ontario, Canada.

In 1901, Robert Kay, 18, was shown as a domestic to Alfred and Elizabeth Amey of Earnestown, Lennox, Ontario, Canada. His date of birth is shown as June 15, 1882 and his immigration year as 1893.

On April 13, 1913, at Napanee, Lennox and Addington, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Robert Kay, 25, farm labourer, born in Glasgow, Scotland, son of James Kay (mother's name is unknown); and Katherine Young, 17, born in Lingfield, Surrey, England, daughter of William Young (mother's name unknown).

Robert and Katherine Kay had three children: Mary Elizabeth Kay; William Ernest Kay; and Harold Robert Kay.

Katherine Young Kay died on November 25, 1918, at the age of 22, in Bath, Ontario, Canada, of tuberculosis of the lungs, the duration of which was 2 years. Her death certificate recorded that she had been born in England and the name of her parents was unknown. The informant was Mrs. A. Amy, the wife of the man who had employed Robert Kay.

On November 26, 1919, at Bath, Lennox and Addington, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Robert Kay, 30, widower, farmer, born in Lancashire, England, son of William Kay and Elizabeth Watson; and Ida Lovinia Handy, 22, born in Victoria Harbor, Ontario, Canada, daughter of John Charles Handy and Elizabeth Beulah.

Robert and Lovinia Kay had three children: Alice Louisa Kay; Sarah Helen Kay; and Charles Johnathan Kay.

Robert Kay died July 20, 1924, at Simcoe, Ontario, Canada of pulmonary tuberculosis, the duration of which was 1 year 6 months. His death certificate recorded that he was born in Scotland on April 13, 1882; that he was a farmer; and that his mother's name was Elizabeth Watson.

His grandson, Stephen Kay, noted:

My Grandfather Robert KAY was a homechild and he married Katie YOUNG daughter of Henry E YOUNG and Ellen Mary Ann KENNAIRD/KENNARD (also a homechild).

Robert KAY was sent to Canada 1894 with no birth certificate and had many ages stated. On his marriage certificate in 1913, his father is stated as James KAY. He was shipped from Quarrier's Home Scotland and on his marriage and death records stated he was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Family members tried to find a birth record for him in Scotland but no luck. I found a Robert Notman KAY born in Atherton, Lancashire, 1880. I sent for the birth certificate and all that was on it was the mother being Elizabeth KAY.

I have the so-called background information from Quarrier's Home in Scotland which doesn't really tell much at all. No place of birth, just that he was said to be 12 years of age in Aug. 1892; his father a collier, dead. Mother Eliza M S NOTMAN married again (I feel he was sent to Scotland to get rid off fast to Canada). There was no mention of any brothers or sisters although on the 1881 he had an older brother Benjamin KAY born 1878 and in 1891 census Benjamin, Robert, and sister Jane born 1890. I cant find anything on Benjamin at all I also have his birth certificate but again Elizabeth KAY as mother no fathers name.

I have letters from an Aunt Jeanie JAMIESON who lived in Cheffoo, China she died in 1918. A Letter from 1920 Shanghai, China, from his sister and one from her husband asking why Roberts name was KAY and hers was WATSON she wanted to know who her parents were. Her letter was signed "your affectionate sister, Maysie." I would assume she had been adopted and found out about Robert after the aunt died and wrote to him because of the questions. I searched for marriages for Elizabeth KAY between 1891-94 and found one for 1893 to James PEARSON and got a copy of it and it stated she was a widow it stated David NOTMAN as the father of Elizabeth KAY but I still cant find a marriage of NOTMAN to KAY.

I also got the marriage of Elizabeth's sister Jeanie NOTMAN to JAMIESON and her father was David NOTMAN. The NOTMAN family were from Scotland.
