Parents: Daniel Kilford and Rachel Lacey, married June 9, 1866, at Clifton, Gloucestershire, England.

Joseph Kilford was one of 6 children from an abusive home where the children were sent out on the streets begging or selling whatever they could get their hands on. An older brother was committed to an Industrial School (Clifton Woods) for begging in 1883.

Joseph was admitted to Barnardo's on June 9, 1883.

In 1884, Joseph R. Kilford, 13, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 117 children.

Joseph Kilford was residing in Toronto in December, 1888, when his sister, Jennie Kilford, left the MacPherson home to join her brother.
