NotesJoseph was born to Elizabeth Kirby in 1900 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. (Year of Registration: 1900; Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec ; District: Sheffield; County: South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding; Volume: 9c; Page: 531.)

In 1901, Joseph was living with his mother, Elizabeth (a hair comb dresser), his maternal grandparents, William & Sarah Kirby, and various aunts & uncles, at 52 Snow Lane, in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. (Census of England & Wales, Class: RG13; Piece: 4363; Folio: 119; Page: 17.)

On March 11, 1907, the Silcilian docked in the United States. The Atlantic Ports Passenger List declares that his father is unknown. (Copies of Lists of Passengers Arriving at Miscellaneous Ports on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts and at Ports on the Great Lakes, 1820-1873. M575. RG036. Rolls 1-16. National Archives, Washington, D.C.)

In 1911, Joseph is shown as a Barnardo Boy with Stephen Orson and family in Monck, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. (No cite found.)

On December 1, 1915, Joseph joined the Canadian Army to serve during World War I. He stated his birthdate to be 1897, however, his birth records show it was 1901. He stated his occupation as "farmer" and his next of kin, Mrs. Elizabeth Kirby of Sheffield, England. (NOTE: Many young men stated themselves to be older in order to enter the armed forces during the war. He was actually only 15 at the time of his enlistment. Eighteen was the minimum age for voluntary enlistment.)

On September 4, 1920, Joseph Henry Kirby married Hilda Pilling, daughter of John J. Pilling and Phoebe Brezendale, in Welland, Ontario, Canada. He stated his occupation to be as a machinist and she stated hers to be as a spinner at Efton Mills.

No other information is available at this time.
