Notes Sidney was born October 17, 1912. His birth registered as Sydney John Edwards. He was admitted to Barnardo's for the purpose of migration from the Plymouth Union on 12 April 1927 under the surname of Lamble. Aged 14 years and 5 month's.His father's identity is unknown. His mother Paulina Hayden, nee Lamble, desserted her husband(Sydneys stepfather) and son a number of years before and her whereabouts after 1921 were not known. Samuel R. Hayden had married Sidney's mother in Plymouth 1916. He was aged 70 when Sidney was transferred by the Union to Barnrado's care. Following his admission to Barnardo's Sydney spent the first 10 nights at the Receiving House in Stepney Causeway, East London and on April 22 1927 was sent to Barnardo's Home in Liverpool where he spent the next two night's. On June 24 1927 Sidney left England aboard the SS Minnedosa. He arrived in Quebec on July 1, 1927.He was then transferred to J.W. Hobday in Toronto.
On July 5 1927 Sidney was placed with Wilfred Austin Prost # 22054. R.R. 4 Peterboro. August 2, 1927 Mr. Hobday requests that Sidney to returned to the Home in Toronto. No reason given.. Sidney sends a letter stating he would like to stay with Mr. Prost. He say's he is quite happy there. Hobday insisted he return to Toronto.On August 16, Sidney arrived with his trunk to Hobday's.
1928 finds him with Percy St. John in Sunderland. Percy has complaint's. Sidney was responsible for a pig of his dying and they think it was on purpose. He was also afraid his children would start to stammer like Sidney. Next we see Sidney with Thomas H. Swanwick, April of 1928.Sidney was requesting 2 pairs of socks to be charged to his account. Mr. Swanwick reported that Sidney did not meet his requirements. He was returned again to 538 Jarvis St.
May 4, 1928 Sidney is unwell in the Home. He had a small carbunkle on his left cheek.. It is 1933 before I catch up to him again. Hobday paid money out of a trust fund in the amount of 22.00 to Milford E. Byers, Omemee, On.
Feb. 2 1933 he is in the care of Mr. Archie Kennedy, Cavan, Ontario A letter received by Sidney states that they have sent a copy of his photograph which they also included in the magazine Ups and Downs.
May 1935 he is in the care of William Finney, Ida, On. At that time he reported being in good health. They were quite happy he atteneded Church every Sunday. With every thing going nicely.
August finds him still with Mr. Finney but in ill health. They thought it would be judicious of him to return to Toronto. It was said that he was suffering from diseased tonsils and possible TB. Tb was ruled out. Sidney expresses great anxiety over the necessary expenses.Dr Waddington performed the operation successfully and the lad is well. He was released from The Western Hospital. Board and Nursing Aug. 9-15, 1933 was 6day's @ 1.75.....10.50..
Nov. 1 he is again with William Finney and they report he is in excellent health.
Nov. 1935 finds him with Bruce Sharp, Ida, Ontario. J.W. sent him a letter requesting money for the Barnardo Christmas Fund Box. Nothing is said of his work or his health. In Dec. Sidney is with Isacc Morton, Cavan, On. At this time he has found a full time job with the tannery in Omemee, On. Sidney's letter to Mr. and Mrs. Hobday states that he could not praise enough the splendid work the homes did for him. The return letter from Hobday states that they are happy with him having a situation and on earning a wage.
Some time in the late 50's contact was made with his Mother and her new families.
This seems to end my Dad's years in the care of the Barnardo Homes. He went on to marry, have 1 daughter and serve in WW2, as a Medic Overseas. He divorced on his return to Canada and was adopted by Arthur and Emily Munt of Lindsay. In 1948 he married my mother, Ida Irene Crowe and had 3 sons and 2 daughter's. He was born Sidney John Lambe 1912 and died Sidney Arthur Munt 1969. He was employed at the time of his death at Whitby Pyschiatric Hospital as a orderly.
