NotesHenry Saltmarsh was one of at least eight children of Sarah Thurley (1826-1899) and Charles Saltmarsh (1823-1898) of Great Hallingbury, Essex, England. He appears in the 1871 UK Census (taken early April 1871), age 15, in the Hertfordshire Reformatory with many other boys, all listed as "criminals under the sentence of detention." On April 20, 1871 he left Liverpool on the Moravian in a party of 3 from the Hertfordshire Reformatory. Moravian arrived at Qu?bec City 2 May 1871.
According to his reformatory record, he was sent to work for a D. Hay, a farmer in "Pittsburgh, Kingston, Ontario."

In December 1876 he married Canadian-born Margaret Wilds in Hamilton, Ontario. The marriage record gives his name as Henry Saltmark. By at least 1901 he had changed his name to Harry Marshall. He and his wife Margaret had nine children.

He started out as a labourer and became a market gardener, a groundskeeper at Dundurn Castle and superintendent of the city of Hamilton's parks.
