NotesIn 1920, Gladys Irene Martin, 11, arrived at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in a group of 100 Barnardo girls (the first group of home children to arrive in Canada after World War I.)

[Gladys] was just seven when she was put into an institution home in London. She and her younger sister were sent to Canada in 1920, landing in Saint John, New Brunswick, then taking a train to a "distributing home" in Peterborough. From there, the sisters were separated. It would be years before they would find each other again.

Between the ages of 12 and 18, [she] worked on 11 farms, rarely attending school.

"She didn't talk a lot about what happened to her ... but we knew it made her sad," recalled her daughter Jean Alexander, also from Oshawa

On December 4, 1928, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Gladys Irene Martin, 20, domestic, born in London, England, to William and Elizabeth Martin (ward of Barnardos Home); and Victor Frederick Fudge, 22, farmer, born in Bristol, England, to Frederick Charles Fudge and Annie Elizabeth Carlet.

A photo was printed in the January 1933 edition of Ups and Downs of Glady's Martins son (now Mrs V Fudge)

Gladys Irene Martin Fudge is honoured on a Memorial Quilt Square (made in Ontario). Gladys was a quilter and her Barnardo photo is superimposed on one of the quilts she made.
