NotesI hesitated to include my Grandmother in the database...If not for the fact that she was needed to care for her mother, who was deathly ill with TB, Selina would have been taken into care by Quarrier's, when she was 14, in 1886, along with her three brothers. Quarrier's knew of her situation...she is mentioned several times in their books, but I have not established whether she was ever actually taken into care.

In 1891 she came to Canada as a domestic servant. Her destination was Bolton, Ontario...near where her brothers were reportedly living. I do believe that she was assisted by Quarrier's or some other group, after the death of her mother in 1889.

Although her father was still alive, he shortly remarried and it seems Selina had nothing more to do with him or his new family, perhaps for the same reasons that Quarrier's did not approve of him.

In Canada, Selina learned tailoring, (her maternal grandfather had been a tailor in Dalmellington, so perhaps she already had some knowledge) and lived some time at Coventry, near Bolton, with her brothers.

Sometime after the death of brother James, she met my Grandfather, Wm Arthur Gill, and moved to Barrie. They married in Feb 18, 1897, at St. Mary's RC Church. Selina converted to Catholicism and was devout all her life. She had a much happier life than she would have had in Scotland. She was a loving and protective mother who was very loved and protected by her grown children.

I feel fortunate that I have, over the past seven years, found Birth and Marriage records for my grandmother's family, and other information that has helped me piece together the story of their lives. Until finding her brothers on Marj Kohli's website I had no idea exactly what Home Children were, nor the hardships my grandmother and her siblings had faced. I did not even know she had a brother James or that her mother died so young.

Selina and Wm A. had 8 children - James Edward, my father Arthur Harold, Francis, Clarence, Catherine (Rene), Anne, Selina, and George. Five of them married and had children...I only knew the children of my Aunt Rene...so there may be cousins out there that I don't know, who are grandchildren or great-grandchildren of my Selina, and who would like this information, and for that reason I have decided to submit her information, as well as her brothers James, Thomas and Arthur McFadzean (also found Canadianized as McFadden)
