Notes Nell McHardy was 14 years old when she became a Home Child. Nell?s mother had died and her father had remarried. Unfortunately, he too died and his new wife, Nell?s stepmother, did not feel she could care for Nell. Nell was placed in one of the small homes which had been started by a Rev and Mrs. Finley. These homes were for 5 to 6 children with a married couple in charge of each residence, in the Bridge of Weir area (or town) in Scotland, outside Glasgow. They were taken over by the Quarriers. She arrived in the Brockville area. She was placed in the home of a Mr. and Mrs. Fraser in Smiths Falls, ON, who had a daughter with a learning disability. Nell became like a member of the family. Mr. Fraser eventually had a gas station there and managed to put three or four (I forget which) children through university.
