This obit came from the Lois Stanford British Home Child Collection ............................Athens- James Surgenor McIntyre,94,of Greenbush (RR 1 Addison) died in his sleep June 11 at Brockville General Hospital,where he had been a patient for four weeks and was about to be released to go home.He was born in Glasgow,Scotland on May 20,1911,the son of Daniel and Mary McIntyre.He was raised in Glasgow and at the Quarrier Homes at Bride-of-Weir,Scotland until he was 14.In 1925 he came to Canada as a Home Child and settled in Greenbush. He worked on a farm until the Second World War broke out,when he enlisted in the Canadian Army.He served overseas as a tank driver in Italy,France and Holland. While in Holland he met Irma Gabriella Dszaja,an immigrant from Holland. They continued writing to each other after he returned to Canada and on May 17,1947,he married Irma in Greenbush. Besides working on a farm,he was employed as a janitor at the post office and aa a gardener by George T.Fulford,in whose employ he remained until his retirement at age 65. He and his wife continued to live in Greenbush throughout his working years. In religion he was a Protestant and belonged to the local Orange Lodge. He enjoyed gardening,his family,reading westerns,having tea and having company come for a visit. Mr.McIntyre was survived briefly by his wife,Irma of Greenbush.He is also survived by two daughters,Dorothy M. McIntyre and f friend John Gunter of Greenbush and Elizabeth A.McIntyre and friend Al of Edmonton,as well as two grandchildren,Tina Superville and husband Andrew of Brockville and Carl A.Phillion and friend Theresa,and four great-grandchildren,Tori and Ryan Phillion and Adam and Olivia Superville and many nieces and nephews in Scotland and England.He was predeceased by his son Stephen James McIntyre in 1959,brothers Hendry McKenzie and Neil McIntyre and three sisters,Nell,Jess and Mary. Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home,Athens,where on June 16 the funeral was held,with Rev.Dolly Dikens of Athens United Church officiating. A piper played at the burial in Oakland Cemetery,just west of Brockville. The pallbearers were Frank and Jarrod Dejong, Douglas Burns, Keith Horton,Floyd Salmon and Kelvin Kerr. Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
