In 1911, Alfred McKay, 14, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 205 Barnardo boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
On December 21, 1915, Alfred McKay, 19, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at Spring Brook, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Elizabeth McKay, who resided at 32 Oldham Road, Newcross, Manchester, England; that his date of birth was 1896; that he was a laborer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had two scars on the upper part of his back and on his right knee.
