SUICIDE IN WOODS

Young Englishman Shot Himself Near the Village of Dresden

Dresden, Aug. 7.--An Englishman by the name of Newman, about twenty years of age, was found dead in Allan McKay's woods near here late last night. He had been in the employ of McKay as a farm laborer for some time. Newman is supposed to have been dead for a week and when found a revolver was lying by his side and bullet hole through his left temple.

BARNARDO BOY FOUND LYING DEAD IN BUSH

Was Chided For Neglecting Chores While Employer Was Away--Went to Bush and Shot Himself--Body Found After 8 Days

(Special to the News)

Dresden, Aug. 7--The dead body of Frank Freeman Newman was found last night at dark by his employer, Allan McKay, in a small clump of bush at the rear of his farm on concession 9, Chatham township.

The deceased was a Barnardo boy, 15 years old and had been employed by Mr. McKay for over two years. On Wednesday and Thursday of last week while the family were away on excursion, he was left to look after the chores on the farm. On Wednesday he went visiting and neglected his work and was warned by a near neighbor named Hall, Thursday morning that he would report him to his employer on his return. During that day he disappeared.

On Mr. McKay's return nothing much was thought of his disappearance as he had gone away at other times. Eight days later his body was found in the bush, and Dr. Wiley, coroner, notified.

The coroner examined the body and surroundings and found that death had been caused by a bullet wound in the right temple from a revolver which was found lying at the side of the body. It was evidently a clear case of suicide, and an inquest was not considered necessary. As the body was in a bad state of decomposition the coroner ordered it removed and interred at once.

COMMENTS ON SUICIDE

Tragic Death of Barnardo Boy Has Excited Much Discussion

Why 15-year-old Frank Freeman Newman committed suicide out near Dresden proved a most prolific source of speculation over the holiday. The facts, as related exclusively in The News, on Saturday, left room for several hypotheses which were advanced wherever the news of the day is analyzed, bisected and digested.

That the boy fired the fatal bullet because he was left at home is one of the theories advanced. The other is that he felt sore on being chided by a neighbor.

But none of these seem to hit the mark. The fact that he got hold of a revolver and must have had it some time before using it shows that the deed might have been premeditated.

It is quite likely that the boy, as young as he was, was thoroughly tired of life, felt that he was handicapped in the struggle for the good things of this world, and decided to evade a continuation of the unequal struggle.

The story of the suicide created a profound shock throughout the county.

I purchased his birth cert due to his sad life. He seemed to be a mystery and have no real beginnings but a very sad end to his life. Frank was born 11th June 1894 at 12 Gifford Rd, son of Harry Wm Newman and Catherine Cosgrove. Research shows the Freeman name appears to have come down to him via his paternal grandfather.
