NotesGeorge came to Canada at the age of 11. He worked on farms in Ontario, and if there was no work to do, he was able to go to school. He managed to get Grade 6. At 16 years, he was out on his own, and received $ 100 for the 5 years of labor. One brother had come in 1912 and one brother stayed in England. George did not find out his mother was still alive until into his twenties when the brother who stayed in England began some enquiries. During WW II, he volunteered for the Canadian Army and returned to England. He reunited with his brother in Belgium, having not seen him for 30 years. He was also able to see his mother who was still alive and in care in a hospital. When he returned to Canada, he married and had two children.
