NotesJoseph Payne was nine years old, a tiny boy of just 32 pounds, when his world changed.
It was 1915 in Birmingham, England. Payne?s father was missing and his mother had to go to the hospital for surgery. Life was hard ? poor children filled orphanages to capacity and were pressed into workhouses.

In 1915, Joseph Payne, 10, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 83 Middlemore children.

He ended up going to a farm in Cape Breton where everyone spoke only Gaelic, pressed into working for his keep until he turned 18. The family there had requested a strapping young 17-year-old who they hoped could take on work at the farm after the death of their father. Instead, they got a young, tiny boy.

Eventually, Joseph Payne grew into a gentle, hardworking and sensitive man.

He was one of the lucky ones who was able to keep in touch with his mother in England.
