NotesIn 1887, Henry Popple, 7, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 12 children from Miss Wemyss in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England, en route to Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

Letter dated 26th October 1887 to Tommy Ackery (adopted name Tommy Ramsey) from Henry Popple (adopted name Harry Edward) then at Covey Hill, Quebec. [The Painswick Magazine, August, 1888, p. 108-109]

"Covey Hill, Quebec, October 26, 1887

My dear friend Tommy,

I was very much pleased to get your letter, many thanks for the card. I like my new home very much. I have a papa and mama, and two sisters now, and oh, such lots of uncles and aunts and cousins. I can only remember some of their names but I will soon get to know them quite well. We have lots of apples here. Papa has a big orchard; he is sending a car-load of furniture to Sherbroke to-morrow. I wish you could come and see me, we would have such nice times, I have a little express waggon, a horse that goes on wheels, and lots of things to play with, I have a good many rides. We have six canary birds, they are nearly all singers, and we have lots of music. We have two puppies and a dear little kitten. I am not going to school this winter, Mary is going to teach me at home, papa bought me a book yesterday, I can run messages; I go to the store and post-office. I have a little lame chicken shut in a box, I feed it, it is getting better, papa is to get me another to keep it company. I have not had many little folks to visit me yet; my cousin Fred Wilson, came one day, and we had a nice time, and the Minister, Mr. Waddell, his wife, and two little girls stayed here all night last Thursday; one is just a baby, but Mina can talk, and is a dear little girl. I am going to visit her very soon.

I hope Alfie Taylor has a nice home, and that Freddie Harris and Bertie Hopkins will soon have one. Well I think I have written you quite a long letter, and I hope you will write me again before very long, I would like to get a letter from you sometime. I sing some of my hymns ever day, Mr. Waddell wants me to sing "Jesus loves me" at prayer meeting some night. I will write you again some day. Give my love to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace and all my friends and kiss them from me. I send you lots of kisses from your loving friend, Harry P. Edwards"

Sadly, Harry's new "mama", Mary Edward, died prior to 1891.

Henry Popple may have returned to the United Kingdom. On December 21, 1903, a Henry Popple, 23, farmer, British citizen, arrived at Liverpool, England, on the ship Lake Erie. His intended future residence was England.
