1911 Canadian Census records place Joseph Powell om Woodhouse, Norfolk, Ontario as a Servant in the household of Auddie and Frederick Marr. Joseph was born in Apr 1889 and immigrated from England in 1903.

Attestation papers were signed 21 Feb 1916 in Jarvis, Ontario. Joseph Powell was born 21 Apr 1887 in Sheffield, England. His Next of Kin was his sister, Sarah Powell of Shepley, near Hudderfield, Yorkshire, England. He was a Miller by trade, he lived at 82 Queen Street, Welland, Ontario. 5'6" in height with brown hair and eyes. He was Methodist by faith.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he was Killed in Action north east of Poperinghe. His sister Sarah's address was confirmed as Miss Sarah Powell c/o Mr. J. E. Kenworthy of Heymoor Villas, Shepley, Huddersfield, England. He was buried in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Poperinge, West Flanders, Belgium. Plot: II.F.33

Canadian Virtual War Memorial states that Joseph was the son of Mary and Thomas Powell of Sheffield, England.
