Notes My late father?s cousin, Bertie Oscar Victor Hugo Pryke (yes it really was his name, I have his birth certificate) was born in 1894 at Barham Workhouse and came from Hitcham, Suffolk.
I found details of him in the Passenger & Immigration lists for Canada.
I contacted Barnados whoconfirmed that Bertie Oscar Victor Hugo Pryke arrived in Quebec on the 11th of April 1905. He had sailed from Liverpool and was one of a group of ?British Home Children?. Most of these children ended up as farm workers or in service.
He was living with a George Thompson in Florence, Ontario in November 1910.
An entry on Bertie?s records states ?boy writes and intends going out West where he hopes to take up a Homestead ? and this is dated 14th August 1911. By 1915 he is stated to be ?in the West?, but I cannot find any land registration for him.
There was a further entry dated 13th June 1919 stating ?Enlisted in the West and went overseas last summer- expected back in Canada anytime?.
I have searched available Canadian archives and can find no record in the Canadian Census?s for 1906 or 1911 of Bertie, Canadian Expeditionary Forces, or any other database.
So there is a mystery surrounding the adult life of Bertie. Can you help?
Barnados will give me no more information as he may have more direct descendants in Canada.
