NotesCharles came from a very poor background - his father was a blind hawker. He was on the 1871 English census living with his parents in Brighton. Barnardo?s records state that he was sent out to Canada through Barnardo?s and Macpherson homes on May 12, 1879 aboard the Peruvian (age 11). The departure port was Liverpool and the boat arrived in Quebec on May 22, 1879. He was one of a group of 53 children called the ?Macpherson party?.

There is a record of him as Charles Reding on the 1881 Canadian Census where he was living with a farmer, William Reed, in Brantford East, Brant North, Ontario. His last known postal address, according to Barnardo?s records, was St Catharines Post Office, Ontario in 1883 in the care of a Miss Gibson. I have been unable to find any other records of him and would love to make contact with anyone who can help me with my quest to find out what happened to him.
