Jack arrived aged 6 and was placed at Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra, Western Australia. He was one of 160 children who came to Australia aboard ‘Ballarat’ in 1928. 115 went to Fairbridge WA, the remainder on to Sydney.

He arrived with his brother Douglas, aged 6. Their older brothers Thomas (b. 1914) and George (b. 1916) had arrived at Fairbridge in 1926.

His wife Ethel died in 1998 aged 76.
