In 1901, Joseph H. Scaife, 7 years of age, was residing at 2 Isabella Terrace, Clarendon Street, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England. Other family members included: Charles E. Schaife, widower, 42, coal (?)ipper; Charles W. Scaife, 15; Samuel J. Scaife, 10; William C. Scaife, 9; housekeeper Florance M. Witty, 27; and Muriel Witty, 2 months. In 1904, Joseph Hutchinson Scaife, 10, arrived at Portland, Maine, USA, along with a group of 194 children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In 1905, Joseph's father, Charles Edwin Scaife, married his housekeeper, Florence Maria Witty. They had two daughters. Charles adopted her illegitimate child, Muriel. He died on July 6, 1935 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire (East Riding), England. Florence Witty Scaife died March 3, 1927.

On October 12, 1914, in London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Joseph Hutchinson Scaife, 20, militiaman; born in England to Charles William Scaife (he did not know the name of his mother); and Ethel Dale, 20, born in Enniskillen, Ontario, Canada, to Samuel Alexander Dale and Gussie Jane Sparks.

On January 3, 1916, Joseph Hutchinson Scaife enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Service No. 802558). He declared that he resided at 215 Clarence Street, London, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Hull, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Ethel Scaife, who also resided at 215 Clarence Street, London, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was January 7, 1894; that he was a farmer; and that he had previously service in the 7th Regt. Fusiliers. He was described as 5 foot 8-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.
