In 1905, Joseph's father, Charles Edwin Scaife, married his housekeeper, Florence Maria Witty. They had two daughters. Charles adopted her illegitimate child, Muriel. He died on July 6, 1935 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire (East Riding), England. Florence Witty Scaife died March 3, 1927.

On January 3, 1916, Joseph Hutchinson Scaife enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Service No. 802558). He declared that he resided at 215 Clarence Street, London, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Hull, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Ethel Scaife, who also resided at 215 Clarence Street, London, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was January 7, 1894; that he was a farmer; and that he had previously service in the 7th Regt. Fusiliers. He was described as 5 foot 8-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.
