In 1901, Charles Sherwood, 35, wife Clara, 32, and children Percy, 10, Agnes, 7, James, 5, May, 3, Charles, 1, in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan

In 1911, Bertha Vellata Sherwood, 7, was found boarding in the home of Charles Henry Leonard and his wife Florence at Blackmoor Farm, Soham, Cambridgeshire

By 1911, Bertha's father appears to have died and her mother Clara was remarried and residing back in Malmesbury, Wiltshire with her new husband Gabriel Fry and children David Sherwood, 15, May Sherwood, 13, Charles Sherwood,11, William Sherwood, 6, James Fry, 6, Thomas Fry, 1, while eldest sister Agnes Clara Sherwood, 17, was an inmate in a penitentiary at Southfield Road, Westbury On Trym, Bristol and the eldest brother Percy was a soldier at an army base in Pembroke St Mary, Pembrokeshire, Wales

On 24 March 1923, Bertha's brother Charles Henry Sherwood, 22, arrived in Canada, part of his passage had been paid by the Canadian Government and part by himself. He was headed to H A McDonnell, Director of Colonization, 172 Front St West, Toronto, he declared his mother Mrs G Fry, Riverdale Cottage, Seagry, Chippenham, Wiltshire as his next of kin.
