William arrived aged 9 and was placed at Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra, Western Australia. He was one of 160 children who came to Australia aboard ‘Ballarat’ in 1928. 115 went to Fairbridge WA, the remainder on to Sydney.

He arrived with his brother Ernest (6) and sister Jane (8).

His wife Marjorie died in 1993 aged 82.
