Robert Sowter was admitted to Lambeth Union Schools on August 30, 1894, with his brother, Frederick. Their sister, Elizabeth Sowter, went into service September 14, 1896, with Mrs Busseys, The Oak, Hitherfield Road, Streatham.
Their stepfather Henry Bromley, resided at 16 Upper Marsh. Their sister, Edith, lives with aunt, Edith Wallis, 14 Upper Marsh.
Frederick enlisted in 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment on December 20, 1898.
Robert was discharged to Barnardo's Homes on August 1, 1900.
In 1900, Robert Sowter, 13, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 101 Barnardo boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The boy has a plain but comfortable home. He has just recovered from an attack of scarlet fever, but he is, generally, a healthy lad. He appears to be contented. Mr Wright is an industrious farmer, and Sowter should
gain good experience here.
