Annie's mother was an abusive alcoholic, and her habits caused them to be homeless. Their father, from stress, had a "fit", fell, and broke some ribs, which caused him to be in the hospital for a time. Alice and her sister, Alice, were sent and admitted to Barnardos at that time.

Four siblings of Annie were also admitted and sent to Canada. One older sister, Phoebe, already lived away from them, and a younger sister, Matilda, went to live with an aunt.

In 1895, Anne Thorne, 14, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 298 Barnardo children accompanied by Mr. Owen and en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

A birth of a May Thorne occurred on May 19 1900, to Annie Thorne, at 214 Farley Ave, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The birth was registered by Alfred B Owen.

Annie married William James Maxwell and lived in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Her last known address was in Milford, Indiana.
