On July 26, 1918, William Vernall, 19, was arrested as a defaulter under the Military Service Act, 1917, and drafted into the Canadian Armed Forces at Sussex, New Brunswick. He declared that he resided in Florenceville, Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada; that he was born in England; that he was a member of the Church of England; that his next of kin was his mother, Mrs. J. Knight, who resided in Florenceville, New Brunswick; and that he was a farmer. He was described as 5 foot 4 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.
